On February 4, 2009 I convened the Crystal Collimator review committee to review the progress of the experiment and to determine whether the experimenters should be allowed to insert the crystal into the Tevatron beam at the beginning of the collider stores.  Previously the crystal has only been put in the beam halo during end of store studies.

Committee Members

R. Dixon (Chair)
B. Hanna
R. Lipton
P. Schlabach

All committee members were present.  In addition, Mary Convery, Jeff Appel, and Rick Tesarek, Jerry Annala, Nikolai Mokhov, and Dean Still were present.

Nikolai began the meeting with a short presentation on the goals and progress of the experiment.  Dean Still followed with a more detailed progress report indicating that 6 end of store studies have been done since August, 2008, and good evidence of channeling has been observed in the last study.  These two talks can be found at http://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=2380 . The studies have demonstrated that the crystal can be moved into the beam without causing undo losses. In addition, there is some evidence that the crystal could lower losses at CDF and D0.  To make further progress the T-980 group has asked to put the crystal in at the beginning of a store.

After expressing some concern that the experimenters would not be able to tell what the effect of the crystal is at the beginning of a store, it was agreed that the beginning of store studies should be initiated at the discretion of the Run Coordinator.  The goal of these studies should be to establish normal operating parameters and to more effectively determine the performance of the crystal.  These results should be circulated before the crystal is used for normal running.
