We discuss the compilation of a document describing LArSoft "architecture".
The possible purposes of this document are:
-
be a reference description of the current LArSoft architecture and of its evolution
-
provide material for the LArTPC review coming in the beginning of 2016
-
represent a suitable citation for physics papers
The document will/may be:
-
public
-
periodically updated to reflect the current status
To facilitate maintenance, the document should be short enough (Ruth Pordes suggested ten pages) and tailor the level of detail not to fall immediately outdated.
A number of examples are flashed on screen during the meeting.
Jim Kowalkowsky suggests the use of diagrams to visualize the components and their relationship, showing an example from a HEPCloud in-progress document.
David Adams suggests to describe the system in terms of data products, modules and services.
He also advocates for a static document, referencing more dynamic content as web link (e.g. wiki pages).
Help should be requested — a few names as potential contacts have been Wesley Ketchum, Kurt (Biery?), Paola (??).
There is no general agreement yet on a number of details as basic as the update and the level of detail.
The operative proposal is to:
-
write the head of a document describing the purpose and scope
-
discuss it
-
identify the content
-
... et cetera
The delivery time is early enough for the document to be useful in the review (January 2015?).
There are minutes attached to this event.
