Ion optical devices are some of the largest and most important experimental equipment
development projects JINA-CEE is engaged in. It is important to train students and postdocs,
who will work with these and other new devices, in ion optics to achieve continued
development towards successful experiments and ultimate performance. In addition,
many nuclear science experiments require ion optical considerations, and students do
not typically have an opportunity to learn about these.
Some basic level of ion optical understanding will be a tremendous asset for any student or postdoc working in nuclear experiment or related areas. Training in astrophysical applications will stimulate new ideas and connections between nuclear students and astronomy.
