Status Report: Search for gravitational waves

US/Central
Auditorium (Bldg. 203)

Auditorium

Bldg. 203

Description
During the last few weeks very exciting rumors have been going around in the physics world -- the possibility of the first ever detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) collaboration! If true, this would be a ground-breaking discovery just in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Einstein's theory of general relativity, that predicts the existence of these ripples in the fabric of spacetime.

There will be a livestream of a press conference from the National Science Foundation as it brings together scientists from Caltech, MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration for a status report on the effort to detect gravitational waves. The livestream will be preceded by a brief introduction from researchers in Argonne’s High Energy Physics Division and followed by a Q&A session. Please join us to witness the announcement of what might turn out to be one of the most important discoveries in physics!

This event will take place in the Bldg. 203 Auditorium on Thursday, February 11th @ 9:00 a.m.

Warning: We do not know what the LIGO collaboration will tell us! Maybe they have not seen anything ground-breaking. If you want to read up on the rumors, click here
