Diversity & Inclusion Town Hall on Supporting Our Black Community Members (I)

US/Pacific
Carla Bonifazi (Instituto de Física - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), Ketevi Adikle Assamagan (Brookhaven National Laboratory), Mu-Chun Chen (University of California, Irvine), Samuel Meehan (CERN)
Description

Topic of Discussion :

In the past weeks, multiple statements have been distributed by organizations many of our community belong to and for our community, and the https://www.particlesforjustice.org movement has made a call to our community.  That page itself contains many resources that individuals can and should use to educate themselves on what has happened and the underlying issues.

We ask that planning to attend means you will commit to reading, listening, and watching the following sources :

as they will form a base for the initial discussion.

Please think further about and bring to the Town Hall your thoughts/ideas on how to support Black physicists, make our community inclusive and welcoming for everyone, and promote racial justice as the field of physics.  These ideas can come from any perspective you feel is appropriate.  We will aim to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to share in a constructive and meaningful way with input from a panel of individuals.

We further welcome those who may feel uneducated or at a loss of words to come and listen to the dialogue.  We welcome individuals to come and reflect on these issues with the same people they respect and trust in their professional lives.  Though we do request that you commit to reading, listening, and watching the content of the links above.

Details to Connect :

The primary mode of meeting will take place via Vidyo (hosted by CERN) and the connection details can be found on this indico - https://indico.cern.ch/event/927177/.  The auto-join link for the room is also linked directly below the text.  If you feel you have a stake in the community, you *should* be welcome to attend. We have chosen to use Vidyo in this case on account of concerns raised by members of the community with respect to the policies of zoom.  Though this may not become the de-facto approach to meetings in the future, we felt it was appropriate to strive to include everyone in this important discussion.

[Please note that the written title of this page and the text above is meant to facilitate the discussion and not impose judgement on boundaries of the town hall.  Text/expression can always be improved and we welcome discussion surrounding this if you desire.]

Panelists :

  • Johan Sebastian Bonilla Castro - Johan (Preferred pronouns: they/them) is a postdoctoral scholar with UCDavis working in the CMS collaboration. They earned a PhD from the University of Oregon in Fall 2019 for an all-hadronic SUSY search within the ATLAS collaboration. They earned two B.Sc degrees, Mathematics and Physics, from Stanford in Spring 2014. Johan identifies as non-binary and pansexual Latinx. Their hometown is Hialeah, Florida and is a first-generation American in a family of Costa Rican immigrants. Johan is the first in their family to attend college and is a Gates Millenium Scholar.
  • Sahah Yacoob - Sahal is a South African particle physicist, who lived through the transition from apartheid to non-apartheid South Africa. They has been one of 4 ATLAS diversity and Inclusion Contacts and is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion for the Science Faculty at the University of Cape Town. Sahal completed his PhD at Nothwestern University in 2010.
  • Steve Muanza - My name is Steve Muanza.  Both my parents come from DR Congo.  I did the first part of my studies, up to the 10th grade in Belgium. Then the rest of my undergraduate studies at university of Lille FR, where I got my B.Sc. in 1990. Then I got my M.Sc. and Ph.D. on ATLAS in university of Clermont-Ferrand FR in 1992 and 1996. I got a permanent position as experimental particle physicist with CNRS-IN2P3 in 1996 working in Institute for Nuclear Physics in Lyon until 2008.  There I worked on the CMS, L3 and D0 experiments. I asked to move to CPPM Marseille, where I finished my D0 activities, before rejoining ATLAS. I'm a senior staff and also the head of a group for future colliders since January 2020. Besides, I'm the initiator and a co-founder of the African School of Physics.
