Description

Abstract: With the discovery that neutrinos oscillate and have mass comes the obvious question: how is this mass obtained? It’s a problem that has puzzled particle physicists for decades — many solutions include additional, right-handed neutrinos and so-called Seesaw mechanisms. These new, heavy neutrinos can span a wide range of scales, from keV to the Planck scale, and often predict very distinct phenomenology and avenues for discovery. In this talk, I will summarize the motivation and mechanisms behind these heavy neutrino theories and discuss some of the ways we can search for them. I will also discuss (if we discover a new, heavy neutrino) how we can understand some of its characteristics, including whether it is a Dirac or Majorana fermion and if it interacts with any new force carriers beyond those of the Standard Model.
