Abstract:
This year marked the ninth anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs boson; the Standard Model particle linked to the mystery of creating the mass of all the other fundamental particles through the so-called Higgs mechanism. While a single Higgs boson is sufficient for this mechanism to work, it may not be the only one. In fact, many theoretical models predict more complicated Higgs mechanisms with one or more “partners” to the Higgs boson already discovered. In this talk, I will motivate and present a recent result by the CMS collaboration, which searched for two such new higgs-like particles in the four b-jet final state. I will then look to the future, to the HL-LHC, where the large increase in proton-proton interaction per bunch crossing will require substantial detector upgrades if we wish to maintain our sensitivity to such signals. A key part of these upgrade efforts, especially in the context of b-jet final states, is the replacement of the CMS tracker systems. I will discuss this upgrade in detail.
