Main achievements

 

    • Leader of the Photon Detection Consortium of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiments since 2017, My Consortium includes 48 Institutions and more than 200 scientists. The Photon Detection System is based on a device designed and developed by me and by Dr. A. Machado, the ARAPUCA, at UNICAMP.
    • Member of the DUNE Executive Board since 2018
    • Member of the DUNE Technical Board since 2018
    • Institutional Board representative of UNICAMP for the DUNE and for the Short Base- line Neutrino Detector (SBND @ Fermilab).
    • Current Responsibilities at National level: member of the Comitê Técnico- Cientı́fico (CTC) da Rede Nacional de Fı́sica de Altas Energias - RENAFAE (PORTARIA No 6.641, DE 20 DE DEZEMBRO DE 2018). I was appointed by the MINISTRO DE ESTADO DA CIÊNCIA, TECNOLOGIA, INOVAÇÕES e COMUNICAÇÕES (Brazilian Ministry of Science)
    • Publications: author and co-author of more than 100 scientific papers,mostly pub- lished in international peer reviewed journals. I have three single authored publica- tions: one on Physical Review D, one on Physical Review C and another on the Journal of Instrumentation.
    • Development of new devices: I proposed, designed and developed, together with Dr.a Ana Machado the ARAPUCA devices, which represents a new concept for the detection of liquid argon scintillation light. It represents the baseline design for the photon detection system of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.
    • Academic awards: APS - Early Career Instrumentation Award 2019; Brazilian Grant for Productivity: Bolsa de Produtividade CNPq, Modalidade PQ – Nivel 2.
    • Grants: I got several grants since when I am working in Brazil. The total amount of resources, as Principal Investigator, exceeds 2,000,000 US$.
    • Nucleation of research centers: I rebuilt the old Laboratorio de Leptons of the Physics Institute of my University. It was inaugurated on June, 2nd 2017. It currently represents one of the most advanced laboratory for cutting-edge research on new technologies for liquid argon detectors.
    • Teaching: I gave classes in Italy and in Brazil at the graduation and postgraduation level. I am currently tutoring five students (1 PhD, 1 Master, 3 Undergrad).
    • Organization of Schools and Workshops: I organized two big events as Scientific Coordinator. A one day Workshop - DUNE Workshop, June 1st, 2017 - focused on the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, in the FAPESP (São Paulo State Funding Agency) Headquarter. I organized an international school at UNICAMP at the end of 2018. The SBF-APS São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Ex- perimental Neutrino Physics. The school was focused on experimental neutrino physics and involved 100 students and 22 speakers.

    • First experimental observation and detection of Cherenkov radiation in liquid argon

    • 2005-2006 Operation of a 25l LArTPC (LALIT) with charge and light read-out.
    • 2002-2006 Study and Simulation of events with emission of scintillation light in ICARUS T300 detector.
    • 2007-2009: Installation of the ICARUS T600 detector in the Hall B of the LNGS
    • Measurement of the time of flight of CNGS neutrinos.
    • 2010-2013 member of LNGS cryogenic team, responsible to run the ICARUS T600.
    • Measurement and monitoring of the nitrogen contaminations of LAr with a commercial mass spectrometer.

Projects at the National Laboratory of Synchrotron Light (Campinas)

    • Characterization of the emission properties of wavelength shifters for liquid argon scintillation light. Data taken in the week 30/05/2016 - 04/06/2016.
    • Characterization of the time properties of wavelength shifters for liquid argon scintillation light. Data taken in September 2016 and January 2018.
