Title: g-2 New Target target design and cost
Present: D. Still, R. Lebaeu, T. leveling
Summary:
Intro:
After the g-2 June 2012 collaboration meeting, the collaboration encouraged the g-2 target working group to design and cost out a new production target. There was a base of simulations that showed that a thinner slab traget could increase pion production by 20 to 40%. These targets would be thin in height ~ .75mm and ~ 118mm in length along the beam (See C. Yoshikawa talk GM2-doc-434). What has bee proposed by T. Leveling is buidling a target that would be a sandwich slab target of thin inconel and berilium like the following picture.
There was also a prototype test target that was used in 90's that an example can be found it Pbar Note 547. This is a stacked air cooled target with cooling channels.
Cost of new target:
Ron stated that a rough estimate of cost would about $50k. This is driven by how much Be would be needed and if the Be needed to be machined. The proposal would be to build a new target with thin slab of .75mm hiegth inconel compressed between 2 piece of thin 1mm Be. Then an Al air cooling channel could be machined cheaper than Be to provied the cooling. This would be the cheapest way to build this type of target. We need more info and possible simulations on the specs for width, height and length of the slab
