Bi-weekly Campus Grids and User Support Meeting

US/Central
Description
dial in #: 866-740-1260 access code: 6643420#
Attendance:
Mats, Marko, Emelie, Lincoln, Chander, Kyle, Suchandra, Bala, Tanya
Emelie:  I spoke with Chander and Barr von Oehsen from Clemson about how we can work with them (and ACI-REFS).  I will present a short overview of OSG at one of their regularly scheduled calls  (on Oct. 8th).  They were particularly concerned about the difficulty of using X509 certificates.  So we will have to introduce them to osgconnect and certificate-free use of OSG.
Chander: Just to motivate this:  We are still demand-limited.  This is a path that looks interesting/promising.  They have a presence at 6 campuses right now.  We want to equip these 6 representatives with enough knowledge about OSG that they can present OSG resources to the researchers at their institutions.
Mats:  ACI-REFS POV - What are they getting out of it?
Chander: Don't know answer to that yet - we still have to work it out.  Barr asked similar question.  The goal is to equip them with knowledge/tutorials, and we would back them up in helping users be successful.  But need to clarify what that means.
Mats: I don't really understand what ACI-REFS charge is.
Chander: Something like what Lauren does at Wisconsin.  Reach out to local researchers, help devise computing solutions for them.  We want to be one of the computing solutions to share with their customers.
Mats: How do we differentiate ourselves, because they already have their own resources?
Chander:  We want the solution that is the best for the researcher at the end of the day.  For the presentation, we want to focus on people who need 1-2 million hours per month.  Highlight those kinds of users.
Lincoln:  Updated modules for matlab compiler runtimes (added r2013b).
Suchandra:  Added 8 or 9 new software modules to the repository.  Trying to keep connectbook updated as well.
Bala: Currently working on module for GAMESS and LAMMPS.
Emelie:  Do we know if people are using the modules much yet?
Suchandra: Will try to generate a modules usage report for the next meeting and circulate it.
Lincoln: We need to advertise better.  Maybe we should add it to motd when users log in: list of added packages or something like that.
Chander: Question about connect support - I'm not sure what the model is.  Recently noticed one OSG connect user with very large number of jobs in held state - none were running.  What is our model?  Do we try to intercede?  Do we contact them when we notice something?
Lincoln:  I am strongly in favor of contacting the users.  If they have jobs sitting held or idle for a particularly long time, I usually contact the user.  I don't think that waiting for users to email us is a good policy.  Users will just give up.  Condor is notoriously bad about telling you how your jobs are stuck.
Chander: I think that's a good way of doing it.
Suchandra:  We're trying to proactively talk to users if we see that they are running into problems.  I think that's the best model to prevent them from getting discouraged.
Chander:  Fishing question:  regarding snow plus.  Saw some email traffic this morning suggesting that they're stuck getting oasis to work for them.  Name: Kevin Labe.
Lincoln:  I'm Not current on their issues, but I have spoken to them in the past.  Last time was a couple months ago.  They were trying to set up their software in OASIS.  I thought they would run through OSG connect and use OASIS to host their software.
Chander:  Right now Scott at GOC has their ticket.  Just wondering if anybody here knew anything.
Lincoln:  We can help with this if needed.
Kyle:  FOS project definitions update:  Emelie has access to change them in OIM.  Email me with any questions or update that ticket.
Tanya: Emelie, can you send me an email when you're done?
