Bi-weekly Campus Grids and User Support Meeting

US/Central
Description
dial in #: 866-740-1260 access code: 6643420#
Attendance: Emelie, Marko, Chander, Suchandra, Bala, Rob, David

Bala:
Software Carpentry Workshop materials/outline here: http://dmbala.github.io/2014-09-29-UC-Test/
Want to merge SWC bootcamp with OSG material.
Difference between this and a typical SWC bootcamp: SWC has unix, github, and either python or R.  It may also have sql and some other things, but we can just include first 3, then build OSG materials on top of that.  Transition by running python script examples on OSG and scaling it out.

Chander:
I'm thinking about who our audience will be. Is Day 1 morning too much time spent on basic unix stuff?

Suchandra:
This is heavily dependent on background of participants.  SWC is aimed at people new to unix.  We could ask about backgrounds and tailor things if necessary.

Chander:
Should we also have 1-1/2 to 2 hours on basics of HTC?

Bala:
We can shrink the SWC material somewhat, but there are certain constraints on how the bootcamps are run.  But maybe we can compress the unix shell module.

Rob:
We (Bala) can go ahead and make the schedule at this point.  Ours varies a little bit from standard SWC, but that's fine.  Flesh out the schedule more and it will become clear what could get covered in the OSG part.

ACI-REFs Tutorials:
Emelie:
I gave an 'Intro to OSG' talk to ACI-REFs last week.  Everyone sounded very interested in moving forward.  Chander, Bar and I had a follow-up phone conversation.  The next step is a set of OSG tutorials for the ACI-REFs.  Their next F2F meeting isn't until March.  The alternative suggested by Chander is to host several online/adobe connect tutorials (webinars) each with a subset of the ACI-REFs.  First group will be the Clemson ACI-REFs.  Will take place in the next month (late October / early November).

Chander:
Webinars: 2-3 hours, one campus at a time starting with Clemson.  Instructors: Emelie, Mats, (Lincoln ?).

Emelie:
Some of the materials for the ACI-REFs tutorial can also be used for the third day of the SWC workshop.

Rob:
Where will you keep/organize the materials? I like idea of putting it into github.  We should try to leverage what is already there.  There are a number of modules already set up to do things. These can forked over into another package for ACI-REFs.

To find connectbook github: Go to osgconnect webpage and go to connectbook and github url at top.

Bala:
We can also use github for the SWC materials.

Rob:
We can discuss this and set something up for this purpose.

Rob to David:
How we might organize these webinars in github?

David:
The model we're using for tutorials right now is just fine.  We should just make sure everybody has access before the webinar.  Recently changed over so connectbook tutorials are in github.  Can be configured to look at both SWC tutorials and osgconnect tutorials.  Changes in tutorial command made recently allow you to look at multiple organizations.  Just need to create organization we want to use and list that in tutorial configuration.  Works through github api.  Can also be made to clone all the modules at once for a particular organization (for example: ACI-REFs)

Chander:
We are going to need to use this about 3 or 4 more times.  ACI-REFs in Utah, Hawaii, Harvard (ISI and WI already have significant local knowledge available).

Chander:
Another real concern about SWC workshop:  WI in the middle of January!  All you need is 1 snowstorm.

Rob:
The reason for the location is because of local SWC expertise already in WI.  There is also going to be a second SWC workshop in parallel for WI specifically.  Geared around CHTC.  The idea was that we could share instructors between the 2.  Access to larger pool of instructors.  We do have some level of certification (Bala is trained).  But we don't have to have it at WI.  Could consider another venue.

Chander:
The real issue is where are the students coming from.

Bala:
I will try to keep developing the syllabus and material.  I can invite all the team members so they can edit the documents.  Will send an email asking for everybody's github IDs.

Modules:
Suchandra:
Bala just sent around a list of newly added modules:
Quantum Espresso (electronic structure)
Uclust (bio-informatics)
muscle (bio-informatics)
cp2k (electronic structure)
mplayer  (image and movie editor)
arp, arp-utils (cross platform library)
Work is ongoing.  Will have an updated list next week.
Overall goal: replicate all applicable apps from xsede campus bridging software list.  Also all applicable applications from local campus sites.

Bala:
There are currently around 60 applications/libraries. Should we inform all the users when modules become available?

Chander:
Which modules are getting used?

Suchandra:
I am tracking module usage.  Working on setting up automatic weekly emails.  Can send one out later for this week.  After that it will be a weekly email.

Checkpointing:
Emelie:
An ACI-REF asked about checkpointing.  Condor checkpointing is not supported on OSG Connect (no checkpointing in grid universe).  Any checkpointing must be built-in to application.  But Derek sent me an email and suggested that dmtcp should work.  I'm starting to test it. If so, it would be a good module to add.
(Some comments that dmtcp has been tried in the past on OSG and wasn't successful…)

Suchandra:
There is a group here setting up checkpointing with gromacs and swift.  The swift framework could be expanded and used with other applications.  If dmtcp works, they could be used together (swift and dmtcp).

No other business.
