Traditional methods of measuring emittance are invasive and inaccurate. A sensitive, non-intercepting measurement of emittance has been demonstrated at the University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER). This diagnostic uses multi-turn resonant excitation to measure the frequency of the quadrupole mode in the high intensity electron beam. RMS envelope simulations are then used to infer the emittance from the measured frequency.
