Description
Use of the Open Science Grid for Production

2007 has been an exciting time for the Open Science Grid! We have seen a consolidation and increased use of the Open Science Grid distributed infrastructure and software for production computation by existing and new users. We have seen the OSG activity teams form deep collaborations.

The 2008 All Hands Meeting, March 3rd-6th, will once again provide a forum for current and prospective OSG members, users, and partners to communicate, discuss and plan the work of the Consortium, the Project and the Facility. The meeting is hosted by the Renaissance Computing Institute at the Friday Center (directions available here) on the Campus of the University of North Carolina (a warm pleasant locale in springtime).

The meeting will focus on workshops and discussions for and among existing and new contributors to the Consortium - scientists, researchers, developers, administrators, partners and institutions. The current list of workshops includes site administration, biology applications, and the needs and status of campus and regional infrastructures.

US ATLAS and US CMS are once again having co-located workshops for their tiered distributed computing facilities. The registration will be common with the OSG All Hands but the agendas will be planned and posted separately.

The workshops are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday March 3 and 4.

Wednesday 5th March will see plenary sessions with a set of panel presentations and discussions covering OSG status and plans, science prospects, local and global cyberinfrastructures, training and communication, and other activities of which we are a part.

In addition, a training session for new users will be held on Thursday March 6, 2008, in parallel with the OSG Council meeting. Also, if you are interested in taking advantage of the presence of many of our participants to have short, more focused meetings co-located with the "all hands" please do let us know.

We look forward to seeing and talking to you!

John McGee, Conference Chair and OSG Engagement Coordinator,
Ruth Pordes, OSG Executive Director

      RENCI

A workshop to discuss OSG related Campus and Regional Infrastructures.

The use of high performance and high throughput computing (HT/HPC) to support scientific research has become a permanent feature of the research landscape. Many groups operate laboratory level HT/HPC systems that utilize open source software and commodity hardware to create a cyberinfrastructure to aid in simulation, data collection, and analysis. The proliferation of HPC systems within many institutions has created an opportunity to create co-operative campus level grids to leverage and harness the tremendous collective power of these systems. Moreover, opportunities to exploit underutilized resources for high throughput computing is fostering the creation of a culture of resource sharing through opportunisitic usage on many campuses.

This workshop will be a forum in which groups operating (or considering building) campus grids can come together to share best-practices, challenges, and opportunities in building a co-operative campus level cyberinfrastructure. The objectives of this workshop are to: i) discuss the current state-of-the-art and issues in running a production campus grid; ii) the role of the Open Science Grid as an enabler of campus and national-level research computing; iii) provide an opportunity for those considering adopting campus-level grids to learn about the technologies; and iv) identify future activities, issues, and action items to improve the effectiveness and adoption of campus grids.

The workshop will be a half-day event, with attendance limited to approximately 20 to encourage discussions among participants. An outcome of the workshop will be a report to the Open Science Grid community identifying future opportunities, challenges, and specific recommendations.
