Jake Calcutt (Michigan State University) - Statement

My name is Jake Calcutt, and I'm a Ph.D. student at Michigan State University. I started working on DUNE testing the Cold Electronics for ProtoDUNE, which I then later helped install and integrate into the detector at CERN. I now spend my time at Fermilab working on analyzing the ProtoDUNE data. My stay at CERN introduced me to a large group of other young researchers working on DUNE, and I gained a great appreciation for being part of that community. As IB rep, I'll strive to continue Erin's work in fostering this community. I've often found the social outings at Collaboration Meetings to be highlights of the meetings, and hope to provide others with that as well. In addition to the fun that a well-knit community offers, I hope it can also serve as a way for young researchers to address their issues - both personal and institutional - within the collaboration. As students and postdocs in the beginnings of our careers, we are often put in vulnerable positions that make it hard to address these issues. My goal is to create a space wherein young DUNE members feel comfortable to voice their opinions, and that allows us to stand in solidarity to tackle any problems we might face individually.
