Description

Bi-weekly meeting of Snowmass energy frontier topical group EF03 (top and heavy flavor production). We will give a chance for everyone to prepare 5-minute presentations to show their plans. We will also have plenty of time for discussion.

intro:
- MC task force is also open to hearing about requests for computing space to generate our own samples. It’s not yet clear what this would be, but we agree it would be nice to have.
- We will continue to have bi-weekly meetings with opportunities to give 5-minute presentations.

Linear collider top physics:
- EW corrections are important. Maybe ask authors of Wizard or Grace to give a presentation in one of our meetings.
- EFT interpretation - current setup should be complete, optimal observable should capture all operators, but it’s true that some effects (like W boson decays) are not included.
- Mass uncertainties - scale uncertainty is largest, but large dependence on alpha_s (current alpha_s uncertainty results in as large of a top mass uncertainty as scale uncertainty)
- Also have to control experimental uncertainties and related effects - photon isolation definition for example for the study on page 14.. Many studies are done with full detector simulation.

 Roman: it looks as if it only deals with unpolarized beams. From what I understand cancellations are different for the different beam polarisations. A flavor what changes with beam polarisation can be got from the two talks here.

Emi Kou is about to finish a paper on that. It may be interesting to invite her for a talk in an upcoming meeting.

genetic top threshold scan:
- optimizing points and integrated luminosity at each point for the threshold scan.
- This is done, future work (for Snowmass) described on p15. Not yet submitted as LOI, but plan on doing so (Kacper submitted thesis today)

alternative top mass extraction at LHC:
- Need to understand fragmentation - at the LHC, this is hard to do from data because all the other measurements that would give information about the fragmentation also are sensitive to top mass.
- For this study (and also others), will be useful to be very granular on the breakdown of systematic uncertainties, which will then allow us to compare different methods to each other.
- However, hadronization models (generators) are LO-based, this is a fundamental limitation at the moment.
