Minutes of March 18, 2021 ProtoDUNE-ND Electronics and Readout Meeting

  • Attendees: Steve, Matt, Howard, MinJeong, Linda, Trevor, Alan, Geoff, Armin, Zelimir, James and Ting
  • News and action task status:
    • Steve reported we are on MINOS plane #81 for decommissioning. That is close to 30% done.
    • Lab F light injection system ORC to be hold this afternoon at 1pm.
    • Steve collected all the MINErvA DAQ servers for upgrade at Lab F
    • Steve also to move all the MINERvA racks to NDOS building for rebuilding and ORC for 2x2 run
    • Linda asked one MINOS rack together with Wiener power supply to be moved to NDOS
    • Geoff to setup software discussion with Howard, Clarence,Anne and others
    • Geoff is also to talk to Paul Rubinov and Christian Gingu about restarting the firmware teststand on the 14th floor WH.
    • Howard is working with Steve, Jim and Gary to design cable tray and cable routine plan for the 44 MINERvA modules.
    • We have moved the 2x2+MINERvA setup ~2"  east in MINOS hall to leave more space to run cables. Now we have about 5.5" space for that.
    • Condenser and short light readout rack are also moved around on the access platform to have clearance for MINERvA electronics installation
  • Charge readout system
    • Armin of LBNL gave a very nice presentation on the status of charge readout and its integration need -- see detail in his slide posted on indico page
    • We need 8 Pacman boards for 2x2 test. Each TPC module needs two Pacman boards to bring signal out from the two LArPixel anode walls.
    • Pacman board in an aluminum chassis will be mounted directly to the T-opening of the feedthrough on the cryostat flange.
    • Each Pacman takes 24V/2A DC input using  "plug-able thermal block terminator".
    • There is currently no-sensing at the load for the 24V line.  Linda suggested to have this function following FNAL engineering design standard.
    • Weiner PL506 is to be the DC PS to provide the 24V.  The current plan is to have 2 PL506 for the 8 Pacman neeed for 2x2
    • Linda suggests to have one PL506 supplier for each TPC module for easy debugging during installation/commissioning
    • The PL506s are to be on the readout rack off the cryostat. There will be also White Rabbit board to sync timing with light readout
      • currently, time stamp is being used to sync the two systems
    • The Pacman with white rabbit can also receive trigger signal from light readout for external triggering scheme
      • the LArPixel system is design by self triggering to readuce data rate and size
    • We suggest to put the PL506s and charge readout WR boards to the same rack with light readout system.
    • Linda will start to rack building include the charge readout system
    • Each Pacman readout (TCP/IP) needs 1gbps Ethernet port. The data rate is low (a few MB/s) so a 1-8 switch could work for 2x2
    • Armin suggests 2x2 still use 10gpbs Ethernet for the whole DAQ
    • Linda asked whether we have seen switching noise from the DC-DC converter on the board. The answer is no.
    • Geoff asked about detail of data rate and slow control requirement. Armin refers to a talk by Peter Madigan linked below
    • MinJeong asked the engineering note and leak test result of light readout feedthrough for safety engineering review. She will send Armin the documentation request.
    • We have some schedule discussion for safety design review (SEDR). Armin comments that work still going on to finalize the design.
    • Linda and Geoff suggested it will be more useful to start looking safety issue in the prototyping stage.
    • To meeting the latest 2x2 schedule, we need to receive documentations and piece of hardware this summer to start the SEDR process.
  • Light readout network request talk postponed to next meeting
