Transportation

There are three main Airports that serve NYC area: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). All of them have car rentals. If you opt to rent a car we will provide, at the time of registration, a temporary parking permit (one per day) for the parking lot of the Physics and Astronomy Department: lots 11-13 here. You have to leave it on the dashboard of your car.

From JFK to Stony Brook University (SBU)

  1. Public Transportation:

    • Start by taking the AirTrain JFK from the airport to the Jamaica Station. The AirTrain ticket costs $8. Once you reach Jamaica Station, purchase a ticket for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Stony Brook Station. We suggest using the app of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to check the time and to buy tickets (link here). An alternative to Stony Brook Station is Ronkokoma. There are also more trains to this station, but once there you need to request a ride through Uber or Lyft.

  2. Taxi, Ride-Sharing Service and Limo:

    • Taxis and ride-sharing services are available at JFK Airport. You can easily find a taxi stand or request a ride through popular apps like Uber or Lyft. The fare can vary from $150 to $200.

    • A cheaper alternative is the company Spartan Limousine, phone 631-928-5454. A ride from JFK costs around $100.

From LGA to SBU

  1. Combination of Public Transportation and Taxi:

    • From LaGuardia Airport you can take a taxi for approximately $12 - $14 to the closest Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station: the Woodside train station. From Woodside, you can take the LIRR to Stony Brook by transferring at the Jamaica train station. We suggest using the app of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to check the time and to buy tickets (link here).

    • Alternatively, follow the signs for buses to the city and take the Q70 LGA express bus (schedule here) to the LIRR Woodside train station (2nd stop). The bus is free. Once in Woodside train station, follow the instructions at the bullet just above.
