Yifan Chen (SL & IB)

Hi Young DUNE!

I am Yifan Chen, currently a PostDoc at SLAC and working on DUNE near detector and its prototypes. Before moving to SLAC one and half years ago, I was a PhD student at the University of Bern, mainly working on MicroBooNE where I also served as a MicroBooNE Young representative.

I am grateful to be considered as a candidate for Young DUNE representative. I appreciate the close communication between Young DUNE and the collaboration leadership. It is a great channel for our voice to be heard. DUNE is a huge international collaboration, and Young DUNE includes students and PostDocs from various countries and institutes. As a Young DUNE representative, I would further gather voices from the wide Young DUNE community, communicate with the leadership and try to improve the overall working condition for Young DUNE.

Matthew Osbiston (SL & IB)

Hello all, my name is Matt and I am a PhD student based at the University of Warwick and I work as part of the Pandora reconstruction team. My work focuses on remastering the reconstruction for low energy (supernova) neutrinos and I cooperate regularly with the FD sim/reco and Low energy working groups.

Having been part of the collaboration for almost a year, it has given me chance to understand the scale and combined effort that goes in to the design of the experiment. I therefore have an understanding of just how important clear communication and cooperation are as a feature of something of this size, and it’s understandable that it’s no easy task and not something to be taken for granted. Therefore, I would be honoured if I were elected to hold this position. I believe this role requires a large amount of discipline and organisation as well as clear communication skills and I believe these are skills which I can provide. I may not have direct experience in this specific context to share, but I have been able to develop suitable skills in other contexts, throughout my degree, and in running successful subsets of organisations in the roles of ‘managing director’, ‘head of team’, ‘vice-president’ and ‘secretary’, all of which I believe have given me the opportunity to develop appropriate skills.

Therefore, I would endeavour to communicate messages from Young DUNE and the needs of those early in their careers to more senior members of the collaboration, in order that we make ourselves understood and represented in a way that all can appreciate. Additionally, I would be keen to further encourage events across the year which allow us to get together and discuss topics most pertinent to those younger members of the collaboration such as at collaboration meeting lunches, and social events throughout the year where subsets of the collaboration are fortunate to meet. I would work hard to encourage and enable more diverse representation of views, as well as representation of individuals - a necessity on such a large international cooperative experiment.

I have met a huge number of fantastic and inspiring individuals so far on this journey and I look forward to meeting even more of you in the future as the community continues to grow!

Thank you for considering me for this opportunity and I wish all the other candidates well!

Matt
