The “Who Ordered That” Collider

Description

Code of conduct: The Wine and Cheese is a scientific seminar and thus questions and discussion are welcome. The goal of discussion is to enhance the quality and understanding of the science for the whole community. Out of consideration for all, even when questions are not straightforward, we will insist that they be asked and answered with respect and civility. We value voices of all backgrounds, accents, pitches and degrees of softness, both among our speakers and in the audience. Scientific claims are judged by their content and rigor, and not by the demeanor of their proponent

The “Who Ordered That” Collider 1h

We plan to construct the next generation of colliders because there is new fundamental knowledge to be gained at the energy frontier — knowledge about both the Standard Model itself and the more fundamental theory that underlies it. I’ll survey some of the main open questions in particle physics and the motivation they provide for a qualitatively new accelerator complex: a high-energy muon collider. Such a collider, potentially at Fermilab, would powerfully complement experiments across the frontiers of particle physics and chart a convergent path into the future.

Speaker: Nathaniel Craig (UC Santa Barbara)
