Citizens of some countries need a Brazilian entry visa. We can provide an invitation letter for a registered participant upon request. Before making travel arrangements check with a Brazilian Consulate about all entry requirements.
CURRENCY
Brazilian currency is the REAL. Its sign is R$ and its ISO code is BRL. It is subdivided into 100 centavos ("hundreths"). Today exchange rate can be found here.
HEALTH CONCERNS
Check with your health insurance about coverage in Rio. NuFact 2015 does not offer any medical or dental service. You may consider buying health insurance before arriving in Rio de Janeiro.
VACCINATION
A valid international vaccination certificate for yellow fever, under the auspices of the World Health Organization, is demanded by the Brazilian Government for travellers who are resident (or have been in transit within the past three months) of Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameron, Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, French Guyana, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire. Please consult the health department office in your city.
Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for anyone who intends to visit the following regions within Brazil:
North: states of Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, Amapá, Pará and Tocantins.
Mid-West: states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás and Distrito Federal all municipalities in the states of Maranhão and Minas Gerais municipalities located in the south of Piauí west and south of Bahia north of Espírito Santo northwest of São Paulo west of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The vaccination must be taken at least 10 (ten) days before travelling.
TIME ZONE
Rio de Janeiro is located at time zone -3:00 GMT. At the time of NuFact15 Rio will be 4 hours before Western Europe and 1 hour later than the U.S. East Time.
REACHING RIO DE JANEIRO
Rio de Janeiro Tom Jobim airport connects Rio to several domestic and international destinations. It is located about 23 km from CBPF.
TRANSFER FROM THE AIRPORT
There are four main options for transfer from the airport to your hotel. We recommend you to arrange your transffer prior to your trip.
SHUTTLE RIO: a shuttle service that takes you from the airport to your hotel for about R$ 15.00. Rides shall be booked in advance either by your travel agency or through the shuttle service site http://shuttlerio.com.br/ available in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
Cab: several companies offer cabs from the airport to any location in Rio. Service can be purchased at the airport after leaving the restricted area. A ride to CBPF shall cost around R$ 80.00
Special bus: a special bus line connects the airport to several hotels. Fare goes around R$ 12.00 and is paid directly to the driver.
Car rental: many rental car companies are located at the airport and reservations can be made through their website or by a travel agent.
BRT/metro: Bus Rapid Transit connects the airport to the Vicente de Carvalho metro station. Luggage racks are available in the BRT but not in the metro trains so this may not be a good option if you have many or big suitcases.
GOING AROUND IN RIO
Rio has a vast, diversified and inexpensive transportarion system operating with busses, subway, taxis and trains. A cab ride from most hotels close to CBPF and the workshop venue shall cost around R$ 15.00 and the ride can easily be shared by 4 passenger without any extra charge. A bus fare will be around R$ 3.50. Botafogo subway station is about 15 minutes walk from CBPF. A subway bus connects the station to Urca leaving passengers about 100 m from CBPF. Subway fare is about R$ 3.20 without the bus or R$ 4.15 with the bus.
WEATHER
Rio de Janeiro has a tropical wet climate with an average monthly temperature above 18 0C in every month of the year and with a period of heavy rain from December to March. In Summer (December to March) temperature may go above 40 0C in some areas of the city. Temperatures above 27 C may occur in every month of the year. The minimum temperature ever recorded in the city was 4.8 0C in July 1928 in the area of Campo dos Afonsos in the west area of the city. The maximum temperature ever recorded was 44 0C in February. In July 2011 temperature reached a low of 8.1 0C also in the west area of the city. NuFact14 will happen in August when precipitation averages 89 mm, there are, in average, 11 rainy days (precipitation 20 mm) and 158 sunshine hours. ELECTRIC POWER
Electricity power in Rio is most 110V / 60 Hz AC but some hotels may provide other standards. You may need and adaptor to connect your devices to the Brazilain outlets. Check this with your hotel prior to your arrival. Brazil new plug (type "N", shown below) is used only in Brazil.
