What is SMP?

The Fermilab Saturday Morning Physics (SMP) program is a free-of-charge series of eleven1 lectures and tour visits given by Fermilab scientists.

The program’s purpose is to further the understanding and appreciation of modern physics among high school students. The lectures are aimed at high school students without any previous scientific knowledge.

This program is given twice1 during each school year. Full details of our program can be found on these pages.

Announcement and Registration:

An announcement of the Saturday Morning Physics program to participating schools for the academic year is made in August.

The students must satisfy the eligibility requirements. Applications will be taken only for the coming academic year and will be granted as the number of accepted students do not exceed the maximum number of 120 per session.

Letters of acceptance to the program will be sent one week before the start of the term.  Please note: Acceptance into the program is not based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Classes, in general, are not canceled due to weather.  Please consider your safety before attempting to come to class.

Session I - September 28 – December 14, 2019

  • August 1: Registration opens for the Fall and the Winter terms
  • September 14: Registration for Fall term closes
  • September 20: Acceptances emailed
  • September 28: First SMP lecture for the Fall term

Session II - January 25 – April 4, 2020

  • January 10: Registration for Winter term closes 
  • January 17: Acceptances emailed
  • January 25: Winter term begins
