Description

The Accelerated AI Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery (A3D3) Institute funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), under the Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) program, recently launched a postbaccalaureate research fellowship this year aimed to increase participation in research from traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM, such as African American/Black, Chicano/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiin/Pacific Islander, and Filipino students.

A3D3 is a multi-disciplinary and geographically distributed entity with the primary mission to lead a paradigm shift in the application of real-time artificial intelligence (AI) at scale to advance scientific knowledge and accelerate discovery in particle physics, astrophysics, biology, and neuroscience. The Institute team reflects a collaborative effort of Principal Investigators from Caltech, Duke University, MIT, Purdue University, University of California San Diego, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Minnesota, University of Washington, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

We will describe the A3D3 postbac program, including its goals, structure, advertisement, application process, selection process (including equity, diversity, and inclusion considerations), planned professional development activities, and future improvements. While the program is just starting, we hope to share our experiences with the community to enable others to create similar programs.
