Minutes and Action Tasks from May 28, 2020 Electronics and Readout Integration Meeting
- Attendee:Francesco, Linda, Anne, Steve, Cindy, Geoff, Trevor, Min Jeong, Howard, Sasha, Nikolay, Basil, Dmitry, Alexander Olsherskiy, Arseny Rybnikov, Sergei Sokolov, Albert Sotnikov (Alix) and Ting
- News:
- Fermilab starts the process of returning to work. We expect some of us will be able to go to the lab to work in June
- Minos hall preparation work (decommissioning) will re-start in couple of weeks.
- PPE requirement and social distancing procedure might slow the decommissioning a bit But we will be ready for cryostat before winter.
- Basil gave a nice presentation on DAC control with Asus Tinkerboard for SiPM bias voltages
- Detail sees the slides posted on the meeting indico
- There will be one Tinker board per TPC module. Each Tinker board will control 6 DACs to distribute bias voltages to 92 SiPMs
- The out of box TinkOS is Debian flavored Linux. Program and control control can be done using Python.
- Apache Web server is available through web client communication
- SQLite database is available to store parameter setting etc
- EPICS integration should be straightforward.
- Is it possible to try this out soon either at Dubna?
- Geoff suggests to use linux PC to run the Tinker board and EPICS. It will be nice to get a board to Fermilab late this year to try things out
- Steve suggests to use a metal enclosure on Tinker board to shield it from broadcasting unwanted radio signals -- there are quite a few plug-and-play ports on the board
- Tinker board Ethernet connection should either through a copper-fiber converter or use a swith with fiber uplink
- Linda will send to Dubna a list of converters she has experiences
- Sash talked about light readout feedthrough layout with PGA crate concept
- Detail is in slides posted in indico meeting page
- Feedtrhough PCBs are mounted directly to the flange for power and signal
- Linda recommended to design enclosure shield the PCBs
- Linda also commented on the need of cable management: routing, grounding isolation, connection stress release etc.
- One question not asked in the meeting: do we worry about thermal stress on the PCB? Do we need to heat up the feedthrough flange?
- There will be one crate per TPC modules to host programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) and cables in to cold feedthrough and ADC cards.
- The cable length from the feedthrough to PGAs is limited to 2m. The PGA crates need to be on cryostat top or its support platform
- Twisted-paired cables will carry out signal/power from PGA crates to ADC crates and Weiner power suppliers in the racks located on top of MINOS hall catwalk
- The twisted pair cable length limit is about 10m
- Linda comments on the need to design cable layout and isolation/protection
- Min Jeong needs to know the weight of the crates for her access platform design
- We suggest to make estimate of potential size and weight of the crates. We will incorporate this into equipment layout on cryostat top and on access platform in MINOS hall
- A very nice schematic is made for feedthrough, cables, PGA crates and power needs etc.
- Everyone is encouraged to look the schematic more and send comments/suggestions/corrections etc.
- Sasha also showed a nice picture of a 48-DAC board design
- There were discussion on the surface-mount fuses and options of replacing and fixing boards in MINOS underground hall.
- Linda wants to know more of chassis for the boards.
- Linda gave an overview of process and documentation requirement for safety engineering design review and ORC
- Detail is in Linda's slides.
- Linda has templates for design documentations, please ask her
- We encourage everyone to use DUNE docDB to store design info such as schematics, drawings, engineering notes, review results
- When posting to DUNE docDB, please use topic group tag "ArgonCube2x2" under "Near Detector" for easy organization
- Nikolay asked the possibility to review system pieces-by-piece. This can be arranged.
- In general, the safety design reviewers need to examine thereal components before giving OK to start operation.
- It takes extra effort to bring component to Fermilab from oversea. We will coordinate the effort.
- Schedule-wise, we are expect the delivery of cryostat and TPC early next year. Electronics components should be ready no this fall or early next year. Review and engineering modification usually take long time.
- Nikolay asked review requirement for class 3B laser he is using for calibration. Linda to provide info.
-
- Linda to send Dubna a lost of copper-to-fiber converters
- Sasha to estimate size and weight of PGA boxes and cables weights. Min Jeong will then check location and layout in MINOS hall 3D model
- Everyone to review schematic of Feedthrough and PGAs and send in your comments/suggestions
- Linda to collect review guidance on class 3B laser system
- There is a list of integration design task on the indico. Please take a look and think of schedule and cost estimate. We will discussion this next time
