Description

Bi-weekly meeting of Snowmass energy frontier topical group EF03 (top and heavy flavor production). We will give a chance for everyone to prepare 5-minute presentations to show their plans. We will also have plenty of time for discussion.

The meeting will be on zoom at https://msu.zoom.us/j/99445309904 The meeting password on zoom is 202021.

Intro

- Any effort to combine LOIs on related topics (linear vs circular collider top mass measurements for example)? We will discuss these at our EF03 meetings, and then Doreen/Reinhard have to resolve issues when writing the report.

top mass:

- intrinsic structure of MCs and parton showers is old (coherent branching is 50 years old), there haven’t been considerable improvements, better tuning and improvements (NLL precision for global observables)

- paper from Salam et al on steps to get to NNLL in parton shower (https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.11114), but the intrinsic structure of the shower is still the same, just global variables are at NNLL in this paper. There are several other such effort to improve the shower, but those are mainly single-purpose showers.

- Andre optimistic that on timescale of 20 years, there will be improved-precision shower programs that will work for top mass measurement.

- Mass from cross-section also relies on MC, to predict signal, background, and to extrapolate from experimental phase space to full phase space. Differential observables are more sensitive to the MC than inclusive cross-sections.
