In the last decade we have seen an explosion in the size and the variety of available recorded data. This explosion has given rise to the field of Data Science which is seen by many as the, transformational, next level in Enterprise Analytics (aka Business Intelligence). Many companies have entered a race to update their analytics capabilities and to bolster their ranks with Data Scientists. A relative abundance of available positions and roles, and a perceived skilled labor shortage makes the field of Data Science an appealing option for transitioning to the enterprise world.
In this presentation, I will briefly discuss the world of Big Data and Data Science within the Enterprise world. I will cover aspects of my work as a Data Scientist within the Product Management team of IRI, and how my experience in particle physics translates to my day-to-day responsibilities. I will also discuss my journey finding a position outside academia and use the experiences acquired as a stepping stone for a general discussion on how to transition out of Academia.
