Description

The Department of Energy (DOE) High Energy Physics (HEP) program supports Detector Research and Development (R&D) including a portfolio identified as Data Acquisition (DAQ) and Trigger R&D. This portfolio, which is supported at multiple national laboratories in collaboration with researchers in the university and industrial communities, benefits fundamental research across the Energy, Intensity and Cosmic Frontiers. This memorandum is to solicit participation in a workshop to bring interested researchers together at the University of New Mexico on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, immediately preceding the CPAD meeting on October 12-14 at UNM. The goals of this workshop include:

  1. To identify the DAQ and Trigger challenges that long-term future experiments will face;
  2. To identify opportunities for near- and medium-term DAQ and Trigger activities that will serve to enable detector R&D (such as test beam instrumentation and software) and/or serve as a test bed for DAQ/Trigger development;
  3. To identify critical requirements for, and promising approaches to the DAQ and Trigger needs of the HEP community (examples include but are not limited to radiation hardness, channel and aggregate data rates, coding and data compression approaches, low power dissipation and low material budget requirements, advanced multiplexing architectures);
  4. To identify future trends in electronics, computing, and other data acquisition technologies that may be promising areas of research for use in future experiments and ongoing detector research;
  5. To identify opportunities for collaboration between organizations, in the research areas identified at the workshop as well as in other areas, such as in sharing knowledge and expertise in current technologies;
  6. To identify activities which might benefit from a realignment of the work being done by participating organizations to improve the efficiency of the overall program by partitioning the necessary tasks into complementary efforts.
  7. To prepare a written summary of the workshop that comments on the areas of future needs, technical directions, and opportunities for collaborative research and development.

We encourage individuals from universities and national laboratories that participate in the DAQ and Trigger portfolio of the Detector R&D program to attend this workshop.  The scheduling of this workshop in conjunction with the CPAD meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to bring together researchers from across the research frontiers to think about both future needs and opportunities (this workshop) and to share information about current activities (the CPAD Trigger and DAQ sessions).
