Argonne National Laboratory Tours: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
The NuFact 2024 conference will offer tours of the Argonne facilities on September 17, 19, and 20. A tour of the Argonne Photon Source (APS) and Center for Nano Materials (CNM) will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday, September 17 and 19. A tour of the one of fastest supercomputers, Aurora, and Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) will be offered on Tuesday and Friday, September 17 and 20. Tours to the DUNE cathode production factory and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) will be offered on Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20.
Dinner Bus to Naperville Tuesday Evening
There will be a bus from the conference to downtown Naperville and back at dinnertime on Tuesday evening. In downtown Naperville, within 3 blocks of the "riverwalk", there are about 25 restaurant choices. See: here
The bus will leave form the APS Conference Center building #402 and also the Argonne Guest House at 6pm. It will drop everyone at 171 Jackson Avenue, Naperville, IL 60540 and stay nearby until the bus captain gives the go ahead to some back to the laboratory. They will return no later than 10pm
Wednesday Afternoon
On Wednesday afternoon, two tours are offered: Either to Fermilab or to downtown Chicago. At registration, participants are asked to choose one of the two.
Tour to Fermilab
The NuFact 2024 conference will offer an exclusive Fermilab tour on September 18, 2024. Take a tour of the latest research and facilities between 1:30 and 4:30 PM. The tour will begin in Wilson Hall atrium, divided into two groups. Group A will visit the Main Control Room (MCR), Muon g-2, Mu2e, and MI-8, while Group B will visit FAST, the Test Beam, SBND, and CMTF. After half-way through, we'll regroup and swap routes. Wearing closed-toe shoes during the tour is a requirement for safety. All attendees must carry a REAL ID with them. Experience Fermilab's exciting science up close!
Excursion to Chicago
Buses will leave Argonne around 1:30 pm to bring participants to downtown Chicago. The bus drop-off as well as pick-up location is Upper Randolph Street at Stetson next to the iconic Millennium Park. From there, the Navy Pier, one of Chicago's top landmarks spanning 300 feet into the Lake of Michigan is only a few minutes away. A list of recommended activities can be found here. One of the all-time favorites is the Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise. In the evening, buses will pick up participants no later than 8:30 pm to bring them back home to Argonne.
The Chicago Cubs are playing home games during the week of Nufact 2024, and on the afternoon of the excursion, they have a day game (1:20 pm) versus the Oakland Athletics. Cubs From downtown Chicago, you can reach Wrigley Field on the Red Line.
